Road Traffic

We are living in a global economy where the mobility of people and goods is ever increasing. Due to this road transportation systems play a key role. Those systems are interwoven globally and have achieved dimensions meanwhile that nobody could have previously envisioned. At the beginning of the third century earth’s roads experienced more than 600 million vehicles; in Europe alone there are about 300 million drivers registered. And the tendency is increasing.

The benefit of road traffic for the economy and the individual quality of life is tremendous. Yet, contrary to this there are manifold negative side effects. Many human beings lose their life daily in road fatalities or get severely injured. In Europe alone, more than 40.000 accident fatalities are mourned yearly. Besides traffic safety it is also environment protection that, in particular in times of global warming, becomes even more and more important. In 2002 the road traffic in Europe needed about 83% of the energy of all transport systems, which was about 26% of the total energy consumption. The extent of contamination that results from this for the environment can be easily conceived. Furthermore, in Europe drivers spend billions of hours in traffic congestions that could partly be avoided. As the consequence this burdens the GDP of economy with minus 0.5%.

Thus, it is key requirement in the present situation and a huge task for the future to make road traffic systems safer and more efficient. This imposes above all strong requirements on the intelligence and degree of integration for future systems. Within the vehicle and road infrastructure Information and communication technologies are still going to be more relevant as they already have been.

“Intelligence” of technical systems always means the intelligence, flexibility and complexity of the procedures, models and algorithms that work in these systems. The tasks are diverse, the most important ones being: (1) Fusion and harmonization of data of different sources on various processing levels, (2) Analysis and interpretation of detector data, (3) local traffic light control, (4) estimation of network-wide traffic states and their analysis, (5) short and long term forecasts of traffic states, (6) winning of traffic information, (7) network-wide adaptive coordination of control, (8) control procedures for VMS of motorways, (9) optimal routing, (10) intermodal traffic management strategies with consideration of environmental parameters, (11) algorithms for impact analysis, (12) road surveillance to recognise hazardous situations and (13) logics for driver assistance systems.
